323 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROSS, George Donald George was born in London, Ontario on March 26, 1937. He first enlisted in the Army (Reserve Force) with the Canadian Fusiliers City of London Regiment in May 1952 and released in October 1953. He then enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in August 1954 and was assigned to the Queen’s Own Rifles training depot in Edmonton, Alberta and then sent on to the 1st Battalion in Calgary, AB. He was attached to the PPCLI, and later attached to Lord Strathcona’s Armoured Regiment until his release in August 1957. He returned to London, Ontario and joined the 1st Hussars Armoured Regiment (Reserve) serving from 1960 to 1968. In January 1969, he enlisted with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment (Reserve) which later became the 4th Battalion R.C.R. (Reserve). After going through the N.C.O. Course, he earned the rank of Sergeant and then was promoted to Drum Major of the 4th Battalion Band until his release in October 1976. In Calgary, the three regiments in Currie Barracks had the honour of an inspection by Field Marshall Montgomery. Another memorable event, HRH Prince Phillip came to present the regiment with new colours. He became a salesman for a farm machinery company, retiring after forty years. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Port Stanley Branch 410. ROSS, Robert S. Robert was born on June 17, 1923, in Ottawa, Ontario. He joined the Army on December 15, 1942 and became a replacement for the men lost by the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry at the Dieppe Raid in August. He trained for two years and landed with RHLI (“Rileys”) in Normandy in early July 1944. Robert was wounded in the chest by a bomb fragment on July 25, the last day of the battle for Verrières Ridge. He survived his injuries and was discharged in 1945 after having served in Canada, Britain and France. He married Dorothy Richards in 1950 and had nine children. Robert was a driver for Doran’s (later Northern) Brewery in Timmins, Ontario and also worked in some of the local mines, like the Dome and Hollinger. He moved to Kitchener, Ontario in the 1970s and worked on buildings and bridges as an ironworker. Robert was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fred Gies Branch 50 for ten years before he passed away on December 29, 1995. ROSS, Merrill L. Merrill was born on July 9, 1917, in Myrtle, Ontario. He joined the Army in 1942 and served in England, Italy, Holland and Germany with the RCASC. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brooklin Branch 152 for a number of years before he passed away on May 23, 1994.
