309 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PURSLEY, Robert L. Robert was born on August 1, 1923, in Windham Centre, Ontario. He enlisted in the Air Force with the 17th Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars in 1941. After training at Camp Borden, Bob was stationed in southern England where he obtained the rank of Sergeant and served as a tank instructor. During his service, he married Violet D. Walters and was later discharged in 1946. Post war, Robert served in Germany on policing duty for six months before returning home. Robert and Violet purchased and operated the family farm in Windham Centre and during this time, he was a trustee on the Norfolk Board of Education and was also Director of the Norfolk Mutual Fire Insurance Company, acting as a real estate agent. Robert was a member of The Royal Canadian LegionWaterford Branch 123 for sixty years before he passed away on October 30, 2004. PYE, Clarence Clarence was born on November 11, 1921, in Orillia, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery on July 9, 1941 and served as Gunner in the 42nd Battery in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe until his discharge on January 19, 1946. Upon his return to his hometown of Orillia, Clarence married his bride from Scotland and they raised three children. He was a skilled carpenter and over the years, worked on all types of carpentry and cabinetry specializing in stair building, especially curved staircases. Clarence was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Orillia Branch 34 for 53 years before he passed away on April 17, 2012, at the age of 91. PURSLEY, Tommy Ross Tommy was born on November 21, 1920, in Halls Corner, Ontario. He enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 12, 1941 and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence of Great Britain and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. In 1947, he started Pursley Paving in Waterford. Tommy was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterford Branch 123 for 41 years before he passed away on December 9, 1996.
