303 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND POLIQUIN, Joseph Alain Michel “Mike” Mike was born on November 10, 1951, in Valleyfield, Quebec. He enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regular) in December 1970 in Montreal. After his basic training at CFB St. Jean, Mike went on to Kingston, ON for his trades training as a Radio Technician. In 1979, at the rank of Master Corporal (MCpl), he was accepted into the University Training Plan. Upon completion of his studies and officer training at CFOTC Chilliwack, BC, he became a Communications Electronics Land Engineers (CELE) Sigs Officer. Throughout his career, he served with 1 Service Battalion Calgary, AB, CFS Carp (NATO SAT COM) ON, RRMC Esquimalt BC, RMC Kingston ON, Airborne Regiment Petawawa and CFSCE Kingston ON. After 28 years, Mike was honourably released in September 1998 at the rank of Major. He went on to serve in the Reserves from 2002 to 2011 working with 33 Brigade Headquarters Ottawa. Mike was discharged from the Reserves in 2011 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LCol). His medals include the Canadian Forces Decoration with two clasps and the Order of Military Merit (Officer). He is a five-year member of the Barry’s Bay Legion Branch 406. POWE, Albert Ernest Albert was born on July 13, 1880, in Plymouth, Devonshire, England. His attestation paper states that his father was John Henry Powe of Richards Landing, a small village on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He had a wife named Catherine and his trade was a carpenter. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Battalion on January 10, 1916, and was transferred to the 52nd Btn (New Ontario Regiment). On October 26, 1917, west of Passchendaele, he was killed when he received gunshots to the stomach. His name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium and his name is inscribed on the Richards Landing cenotaph. POND, Garry L. Garry was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on January 22, 1952. He left his hometown in 1972 and joined the Canadian Armed Forces, Air Element on September 22, 1972. His military career trained him as a logistics expert in the supply trade. His first posting was to CFB North Bay, Ontario from 1972 to 1976. A lot happened there - he met his future wife Linda at the Corporal’s Mess, and that is where his daughter was born. Postings at CFB Shilo, Manitoba from 1976 to 1981; CFB Gagetown, NB from 1981 to 1983; Saint John, NB from 1983 to 1985; CFB Petawawa, ON from 1985 to 1988 where he served as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant for 2 CER and finally National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa, ON from 1988 until release in 1996. His Ottawa posting saw Garry serve as Senior Supply Technician of Canadian Forces Communications Command. Garry embraced the relationships he made during his military career, and applied his supply knowledge to DND for another 23 years, retiring in October 2018. Upon his military release in 1996, Garry continued to flex his leadership muscles as a volunteer for The Royal Canadian Legion. In 2019, and after 31 years of Legion service, Garry Pond was elected as President of Ontario Command, Royal Canadian Legion.
