This was one of the first areas invaded by the Germans, forcing his family of five to flee their homeland. The Canadian Government provided asylum for refugees in northern Saskatchewan where farming communities emerged. When war broke out in 1939, Hans joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1941 and became a tail air gunner with 16 Squadron. While in northern England, he met the love of his life, Josephine Middlebrook, who later immigrated to Canada where they married and had two daughters. After his discharge in August 1946, Jimmy tried his hand at farming but realized he missed military life so he re-enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was posted overseas and assisted in opening the peacekeeping base in Zweibrücken (3Wing). Later postings includedWatson Lake, Lachine, Edmonton, Fort Churchill, Ottawa and Baden Solingen (4 Wing), finally retiring in 1968. Jimmy passed away on December 16, 1987.
