297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PEARSON, Lyman R. Lyman was born on September 16, 1923, in Burpee Township, Ontario. He joined the Army on October 1, 1943 and served with #3 Platoon “A”, No. 20 C.A. (B) T. C. Army in the United Kingdom and the Central Mediterranean area. He was a prisoner of war for thirteen months before being discharged on August 8, 1945. Lyman was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Little Current Branch 177 before he passed away on August 26, 1996. PETTIGREW, William “Bill” Bill was born in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland on May 16, 1919. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in July 1940 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Sicily and Italy with the 98th Anti-tank Battery, Canadian Army Special Forces. After his discharge on April 16, 1945, Bill returned to the Tiverton area where he farmed with his wife Helen and their family of eight children. After building a new home, Bill worked for Ontario Hydro at the Bruce Nuclear Power development near Tiverton. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tiverton Ferris Branch 430 and Kincardine Branch 183 for 51 years before he passed away on August 28, 1987. PEDGRIFT, Harold John Harold was born in London, England on July 22, 1892. He came to Canada and worked for a Morris Township farmer prior to his enlisting. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on September 1, 1915, with the 71st Battalion in Brussels. He was sent overseas in 1916 on the SS Cassandra. He served with the 21st Battalion and was injured in November 1917. He suffered a gunshot wound and had shrapnel hit his arm and leg. He was recovering in hospital for one month and then joined the Canadian Infantry Works Coy. After his recovery, he was married to Edith in England in 1918. He was demobilized on March 28, 1919, and returned to Canada and the Brussels area with his wife. They felt the need to return to England and in 1937 they sailed on the Ascania from Montreal. Harold, or “Jack” as he was known, died on June 28, 1961, in England. He was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 formed in October 1931 and was a member for six years until leaving for home in England.
