283 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NICHOLSON, Joseph Lee James Joseph was born in 1921, in Bluevale, Morris Township, Ontario. He farmed alongside his family until the age of 22, when he joined the Army (Regular Force) in 1943. He was part of the Carleton and York Regiment Infantry and served in North Africa and Italy. He made the rank of Lance Corporal and was killed in action on April 10, 1944, in Ortona, Italy. He is remembered with honour at Moro River Canadian War Cemetery. O’HARA, Charles Louis Charles was born in Waubaushene, Ontario, on July 3, 1890, the son of John and Rosalie (Deschene) O’Hara. On June 3, 1916, Charles enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 117th Overseas Battalion (The Simcoe Foresters), Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was 26 years old and single. He listed his trade as farmer, and had no previous military experience. Private O’Hara sailed from Canada on the SS Metagama, to arrive in England on May 14, 1917. After a few months in England with the 3rd Reserve Battalion, he joined his front-line unit in France with the 19th Canadian Infantry Battalion, Charles suffered a gunshot wound in the leg on August 27, 1918. After a year in convalescence, he was invalided to Canada to be discharged as medically unfit on June 27, 1919. He settled on Gloucester Pool, Severn River, with his wife Ethel (Laughlin) where they raised two children. Charles worked on the lumber barges on Georgian Bay until his injured leg became an issue. He then turned to building homes and fireplaces while running a successful fishing and hunting lodge. Charles passed away on July 5, 1953, at the age of 63. He is buried in Midland, Ontario. OCHITWA, Michael S. Michael was born on November 21, 1924, in Norquay, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in March 1944 and served as a Rifleman in Canada, France, England and Northwest Europe until his discharge in June 1946. Michael received the 1939-1945 Victory Medal as well as the France and Germany Star. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Harry Brown V.C. Branch 497 for 31 years before he passed away on January 29, 2011.
