281 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NEWMAN, Brian Robert Brian was born on June 12, 1944, in Timmins, Ontario. During his formative years, he attended public school in Timmins and later graduated from South Porcupine High School with a diploma. After school, he travelled west to Vancouver where he worked as a mailman. In the late sixties, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and underwent basic training in St. Jean, Quebec. After basic training, Brian was sent to RCAF Station Camp Borden for trades training as an Instrument Electrical Systems technician. During his time at Borden, he was called out to participate in the deployment for the October Crisis of 1970 in Quebec. After he left the RCAF in 1971, Brian worked in Toronto and received qualifications as a millwright. Currently, Brian is retired and resides in Midland. He is a three-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coldwater Branch 270. NEWTON, Oscar Frederick “Freddy” Oscar was born in Belmont Township, Ontario on July 28, 1918, the son of Joseph Oscar Newton and Bessie Slater. He spent his early years on his father’s farm and after completing his high school entrance exams went to work as an apprentice baker in Havelock in 1935 and married Myrtle Elizabeth Henderson in 1937. They had one daughter, Darlene Jean Newton. He enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in April 1940 and was finally attested on May 3, 1941, in Hamilton. His initial posting was in RCAF Gander, Newfoundland as a cook and he was promoted to Aircrew and Sergeant in May 1943. Most of his training was in the Montreal area and he proceeded overseas on March 5, 1944. Once in the UK, he was attached to RAF #76 Squadron. On December 26, 1944, their Halifax Bomber was hit by flak and crashed near Nassonge, Belgium. Seven of the eight crew members perished including “Freddy” who was one of the air gunners. Flt/Sgt Newton is buried in the Heverlee War Cemetery in Belgium and is commemorated on the cenotaph in Peterborough, Ontario and the Havelock War Memorial. NEWMAN, Henry L. Henry was born on January 13, 1906, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He went to war in 1939, leaving his wife at home with six children. Times were very hard on them both during the time he served in England with the Canadian Forestry Corps before being discharged on April 5, 1945. Henry was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Fredericton before he passed away on July 28, 1985.
