279 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NEVIN, Alistair Cambridge Al was born on November 21, 1947 in Windsor, Ontario. He was sworn into the Royal Canadian Navy (Regular Force) at HMCS Hunter in Windsor, Ontario on December 21, 1964. Military service had always been part of the family and Al continued the trend. He completed his basic training at HMCS Cornwallis and was awarded the honour of ‘Best All-Around Man’ in his division. He continued with training in Radio Communications at the Communications School, also in Cornwallis. After a short posting to Albro Lake Naval Radio Station in Dartmouth, NS, he was posted aboard the destroyer HMCS Kootenay. Ongoing training took him to the technical side of Communications, and he continued as a Communication Technician. Several years aboard the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure was a highlight. HMCS Bonaventureserved as a platform for anti-submarine aircraft in the North Atlantic and Caribbean. His career also included a posting to the Canadian Naval Radio Station at CFS Mill Cove, extensive technical training at the Canadian Forces Base HMCS Stadacona in Halifax and he served aboard the HMCS Iroquois. M/Cpl Nevin obtained his honourable release in July 1975 after serving close to eleven years of service. He is a five-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Windsor Branch 255. NEVIN, Jack Robert Jack was born on September 15, 1945, and grew up in Windsor, Ontario. He attended Kennedy Collegiate and Vincent Massey Collegiate after which he moved to California to live with his grandparents. Like many in his family who had military service before him, he decided to join the USArmy in March 1966 during the Vietnam War. He was inducted in Los Angeles (Long Beach), California and was assigned to the Sixth US Army, 2nd of the 34th Armoured Tank Battalion designated specifically for combat in Vietnam. After basic training, he served in Administration with the Battalion. He served from March 1966 until February 1968 with reserve limit and obligation through March 8, 1972. Sergeant Nevin obtained an honourable discharge in February 1968. NEVIN, Frederick Douglas “Doug” Doug was born on March 8, 1921 in Windsor, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy (Regular Force) on February 1, 1943, through the HMCS Hunter in Windsor, Ontario. Doug was assigned to HMCS Bytown, a Stone Frigate in Ottawa. Time was spent at the Signal School in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec and then on to training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in September 1944. From Cornwallis, Doug went on to serve with the HMCS Hochelaga, whose main tasks included performing general harbour duties. He was then posted to HMCS Fergus (K686), a Flower Class Corvette based out of Halifax. His ship joined the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Escort Force (MOEF), Escort Group C-9. HMCS Fergus was a transAtlantic convoy escort during the ‘Battle of the Atlantic’. After a short deployment to the base HMCS Avalon in Newfoundland, he was then posted aboard HMCS St. Laurent (River Class Destroyer). Able Seaman Nevin was honourably discharged on October 11, 1945. Doug passed away on October 14, 2009. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Windsor Branch 594.
