259 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND METCALFE, Keith Holland Keith was born in Hamilton, Ontario on July 5, 1923. He enrolled in the Canadian Army Militia on May 12, 1942. He was in the 1st Canadian Paratroop Battalion; however his unit was not deployed overseas prior to the end of the war. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Willowdale Branch 66 and Bala Branch 424 for a total of 58 years holding many service positions. Awarded a Life Membership, Keith was also the recipient of the Legion’s Meritorious and Palm Leaf awards and a loyal supporter of the Airborne Cadets. Keith received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award for community service in Muskoka Lakes. Keith passed away on February 3, 2020. MILLER, Herman August Herman was born in Berlin, Ontario on January 17, 1877, to John and Mary Miller. Herman was married to Mary, with two children, and working at a Tannery as a Currier when on December 14, 1915, he joined the World War I effort. He had previously spent three years in the 29th Infantry. He enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with 118th Battalion on December 14, 1915. Basic training was problematic as Herman had some health issues. Rheumatism, rapid heart action and an inability to stay in an extended route march were enough for Herman to be examined further by the medical board. It was the findings of the medical board that Herman be released. After eight-and-a-half months, he was honourably discharged on August 30, 1916. Herman’s son, Oscar, served during World War II. Herman passed away in 1963 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener. MILLEA, Thomas Thomas was born on January 25, 1898, in Goodwin-Gardens, Kilkenny County, Ireland, to John and Margaret Millea along with three brothers and two sisters. He served with the Irish Regiment in France duringWorldWar I. He married Elizabeth Nicholls of Durham, Ontario in 1935. He was a long-time member of The Royal Canadian Legion Durham Branch 308. He passed away on February 11, 1976, and is buried in Durham.
