251 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McQUARRIE, John Allen John was born in Argyle, Ontario on March 28, 1894. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on April 26, 1916, in Kirkfield Inn and was a lieutenant in the 109th Battalion. He was later transferred to the 52nd Battalion after the 109th was broken up. He went from Lindsay to Barriefield with the 109th that spring, and travelled to the United Kingdom on the RSM Olympic that summer. He was sent to France shortly thereafter. He was gassed and wounded twice, once in late 1916 and again in 1917. He was discharged on January 3, 1919. Before the war, John worked as a bank clerk at the Bank of Hamilton branch in Toronto and following the war, he worked as a maintenance man for the CPR in northern Ontario. By the 1940s, he was working as a clerk in the de Havilland airplane factory in Toronto, and by the 1950s he was employed as a clerk in the office of the Massey-Harris farm implement factory. John was never married and lived in Toronto with his spinster sisters Tena, Bella, and Effie McQuarrie for most of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. By the late 1950s, John and Effie were living on a suburban property in Langstaff. John passed away on August 4, 1963. MEEKER, Charles Howard “Meek” Charles was born on March 25, 1895, in London, England. He came to Canada in 1912 and enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the CEF on June 8, 1915, with the Royal Canadian Dragoons. He was moved to the front lines in Amiens, France where he was involved in a heavy battle and exposed to poisonous gas. Meek, as he was called, spent four months in New Zealand Stationary Hospital, Wisques, France plus an additional year in the United Kingdom with lung problems. Private Meeker was returned to Canada and released on March 4, 1919. Despite limitations with his health, he took a major role in organizing retired vets to become Home Guards. He was also instrumental in organizing the 24th Ambulance Co. with the Royal Canadian Military Corp. After WorldWar I, Meek worked at Kuntz Brewery. He then managed a hotel in New Hamburg with his two oldest sons. In the early 1930s, he was President of the British Empire Service League, Branch 50 Kitchener. Charles married Kathleen (Kitty) Wharnsby and raised five boys. Hospitalized with respiratory problems, Charles passed away on December 15, 1975, and is buried in the Forest View Cemetery in Chalk River, Ontario. MEADE, Edward Arthur Edward was born in Smith Falls, Ontario, on September 10, 1923. On March 4, 1942, he enlisted in the Ottawa Division of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as an Ordinary Seaman. During World War II, he served on several ships including the HMCS Carleton, Cornwallis, Stadacona, Avalon, and Chilliwack in the area of the North Atlantic. He moved up from Ordinary Seaman to Able Seaman and then Leading Seaman. He received the 1939-1945 Atlantic Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Good Conduct Badge, and Victory Medal. On November 14, 1945, he was discharged and demobilized. After the war, he joined the Canadian Army Reserve. Edward married Rita and they had seven children. He passed away in Kelowna, BC on February 13, 1992.
