249 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McMINN, Thomas Alton Thomas was born on December 18, 1890, in Wiarton, Ontario, a small town in the Bruce Peninsula, to Hestor and Joseph McMinn. His family eventually moved to St. Joseph Island at the western end of Lake Huron. His attestation document lists his trade as a barber. On January 26, 1918, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 4th Battalion of the 1st Central Ontario Regiment. On August 9, 1918, he was hit in the head with shrapnel. He is buried in the LeQuesnel Community Cemetery, Somme, France. His name is inscribed on the Hilton Beach memorial on St. Joseph Island. McPHAIL, John John was born in Paisley, Ontario on January 17, 1896. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 3, 1915, and served in Europe with 160th Battalion. He was a member of the Tobermory Guard before joining the 160th Bruce Battalion. McNAB, John Ide John was born in Milton, Ontario on August 3, 1891. Later, his family moved to Richards Landing, a small village on St. Joseph Island, east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He was a secretary at the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA when he joined the Army (Regular Force) with the 2nd Battalion, 51st Soo Rifles on August 1, 1914. Prior to that, he had served in the Saskatchewan Horse Artillery for two years. On September 23, 1914, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, and they sailed overseas on October 3, 1914. John was killed in action on June 16, 1915, but his body was never recovered. His name appears on the Vimy Memorial and is inscribed on the cenotaph in Richards Landing.
