247 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MCLELLAN, Alexander J. “Alex” Alex was born on April 19, 1890. He served as a Canal Patroller before enlisting with the 154th Battalion CEF on January 19, 1916, arriving in England as a training Sergeant. He gave up his rank to go to France with the 21st Battalion on May 4, 1917 where he served as a Private in many actions at Mons, Marne, Passchendaele and Hill 70 with his brother James until he was severely wounded in March 1918 near the Lens sector. He recuperated in England and Canada, was discharged on November 16, 1918 and he often remarked how everything seemed easy after serving in the trenches. He went on to live in Mille Roches, Ontario, had ten children and was a beekeeper and a postmaster. In retirement, he spent time in Madeira Beach, Florida with his sister Mary and his brother Aeneas (Mac), also a WorldWar I veteran. Alex was 97 when he died onAugust 16, 1987 with his family by his side. Alex had six sons. His oldest served in the RCAF as a pilot in World War II while his other sons John and Paul served in peacetime. Alex was a Life Member of Cornwall Legion Branch 297. McLELLAN, Robert Joseph “Bob” Robert (Bob) was born in Buchans, Newfoundland on September 28, 1944, to Jack and Lucy (Hefferan) McLellan. He had six siblings, Ron, Mary, Veronica, Denis, Cyril, and Kevin. After completing high school, Robert joined the Army (Regular Force) and was stationed at several different bases across Canada as well as outside of Canada, including a tour of duty with United Nations in the Gaza Strip, Egypt in 1966. On July 1, 1967, Robert and Joyce McLellan were married and they raised one son, Troy. Bob also served with NATO in Germany from 1968 to 1971 and Bermuda from 1974 to 1977. He retired in 2001 after 38 years in the military with the rank of Sergeant with the Royal CanadianArmy Service Corp. After retirement, he worked at several part time jobs and officially retired from the Federal Government in April 2014. He was a 25-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Bob passed away on January 12, 2019, and has been laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario. In memory of Bob’s service, his name has been inscribed on plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veteran Memorial Wall. MCLELLAN, Archibald Eugene “Archie” Archie was born onAugust 12, 1897, in Mille Roches, Ontario. He left high school on January 11, 1915 to enlist and train with the 59th Regiment, “C” Company CEF in Bermuda before embarking for France on May 29, 1916, arriving in Le Havre on August 14, 1916. Private McLellan was in the 38th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) when he was killed in action on November 18, 1916, at age nineteen, at the Battle of the Somme. He is memorialized on the Vimy Memorial in Pas de Calais, France. His official death notice reads, “Your son was busily engaged with the signals when he was killed. His work with the Battalion has always been of the highest caliber and in the last stage, was outstanding. His example was always a cheerful one, even in the most adverse conditions, and his loss will be severely regretted by all concerned.” In a letter home, his brother Alex, also in France, commented that “Archie is now in a far better place than we are.”
