237 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MCCULLIGH, Lealand Randolf Lealand was born on June 3, 1923, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. He joined the Army on December 20, 1941 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and in the Central Mediterranean area with the Saskatchewan Light Infantry and the Queen’s Own 48th Highlanders. Discharged on November 17, 1945, Lealand recounted that in Italy, his squad came under fire and they were pinned down. After the firefight, they found two German soldiers, one alive and one dead, inside a barn with a system of pulleys and gun ports rigged to fire in a volley or single shots. This engineering marvel had an estimated dozen or so ports which made it seem as if ten or twelve soldiers were firing. Later, while rehabbing in Scotland, Lealand married a nurse and they moved to Orangeville, Ontario where they farmed for a few years before he secured a job in Camp Borden. Lealand was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Angus Branch 499 for twelve years before he died at his desk on November 22, 1960. MCDOUGALL, Lauchlan Lauchlan was born in Gordon Township on July 3, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served in Europe during World War II. Lauchlan was a POW after his aircraft was shot down in 1944. He was discharged in 1945 and he passed away on September 23, 1983. MCCULLOCH, Harold J. Harold was born on August 8, 1904, in Campbellford, Ontario. He left his job in banking to go to war as a Tech/Ord, enlisting inAugust 1939. He served in Signals, Artillery and the Infantry where he was commissioned. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps as a Pay Master and arrived in Europe six weeks after the invasion. Harold was injured both in training and on the Continent and he was discharged in January 1946 after serving in Canada England, Holland, Belgium and France. He received two small pensions later in life as complications resurfaced. He died on June 20, 1991. Harold had three older brothers who were in WWI and WWII.
