231 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MATTHEWS, Leonard Allan Leonard was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on May 22, 1962. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in September 1983 and served with 1-RCR in Cyprus. He was released in September 1987. McARTHUR-WATSON, Benjamen James “Ben” Ben was born in Lion’s Head, Ontario on January 28, 1988. He enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) on February 2, 2006, and served in Kandahar, Afghanistan with the Grey and Simcoe Foresters. Ben received the “Soldier of theYear Award” in 2012. He resided in Tobermory, Ontario until 2006. MAYBERRY, William William was born in Sheffield, England on May 2, 1892. His family immigrated to Canada in 1902 when he was ten years old. They settled near the town of Brussels. He was a 23-year-old farmer when he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 19, 1915. His sister was listed as his next of kin. He did his basic training in Galt and went overseas in March 1916. He went to serve in the 10th T.M. Battery, Canadian FieldArtillery in France inAugust 1916. He sent letters to his sister over the years, and copies are on file at the Brussels Legion. He complained the rats had run out of the trenches and you had to be on the watch, or they would try to run off with your things, even “my mess tin”, reported his sister. He appreciated the parcels from home. He received thirty francs a month and a franc was worth .20 cents. He felt it was a real treat when he once bought four eggs at .05 cents each. He was wounded on October 28, 1919, and passed away on December 1, 1919, at the Abbeville Hospital in France. He is buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension.
