227 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MARION, Fernand J. Fernand was born in Metcalfe, Ontario on February 8, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on October 4, 1940 as a part of the Royal Canadian Artillery 1st Anti-tank Regiment. Fernand served as a Gunner in Canada, United Kingdom as well as in Sicily and Ortona, Italy during World War II. For his service, he earned the 19351945 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was discharged on July 16, 1945. Fernand was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Cornwall Branch 297 for thirty years before he passed away on January 11, 1999. MARTIN, John Gartshore John was born in Kitchener, Ontario on April 14, 1921, to John Alexander and Jessie (Gartshore) Martin. He had two brothers, Wilson Alexander and William Jamieson. William would be killed in the war. John attended school at the Kitchener Collegiate Institute and University of Toronto and received a law degree. As many young men did at the time, in 1940, he joined the World War II effort with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada. Two years of tactical and weapons training along with extensive leadership drills prepared John for the upcoming involvement as a lieutenant of the 1st Battalion of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, the continuous deadly battles in Normandy, the Netherlands and Germany. John’s leadership and experience in battle brought forth many mentions in dispatches and promotions. At the end of the war, John was discharged with the rank of Major and was awarded with Canada’s second highest award, the Distinguished Service Order. John married MaryAnn (Kabel) and they raised three children, Cathryn Jean, Jamieson (Jamie) and David. John passed away on February 20, 2007, and is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener. MARION, Thomas Edward “Ted” Ted was born on May 20, 1933, in Verdun, Quebec. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1956 in Toronto, Ontario after having served in the Reserves and was assigned into the Canadian Provost Corps. After completing his training in Shilo, Manitoba, Ted went on to serve with the 2nd Canadian Guards in Petawawa, Canadian Forces Base Shilo Manitoba, Borden Ontario, Gagetown NB, Winnipeg MB. While posted to CFB Lahr, Germany, he was the Nuclear Biological Chemical Warfare (NBCW) officer for the period of 1974 to 1978. Ted also completed a peacekeeping mission in Cyprus in 1965. His medals include the Special Service Medal (NATO), Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, United Nations Force in Cyprus and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. He was also awarded Commendation from Canadian Forces Europe. Ted was honourably discharged in 1981 after 25 years of service at the rank of Captain. He passed away on October 29, 2010, at the age of 77.
