223 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAHON, Lesli J. “Les” Les was born on April 10, 1915, in Star City, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army on July 26, 1940 and served with the Algonquin Regiment, “B” Company, Military Police in Canada, France, Holland and Germany. Discharged in November 1945, Corporal Mahon was awarded the 1939- 1945 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the Campaign Star and the War Medal 1939-1945. After the war, Les worked for the Kapuskasing Police then was employed with the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company until his retirement. He was a member of Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85 for 35 years until he passed away on November 3, 1985. MALLION, William Caleb William was born on December 2, 1892, in Kent, England. He served in the Army during World War I in England, France and Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal from Great Britain when he awoke one night in France and detected an enemy platoon approaching. By giving the alarm, he saved the day and members of his group. In World War II, he served in the Home Guard. He was a member of the Fenelon Falls for twelve years before he passed away on September 27, 1967. MAHONEY, William Dennis William was born in Westville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia on April 10, 1934. He enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces (Armoured Corps) on November 6, 1952, just in time to serve in Korea at the end of Canada’s involvement in the conflict. Back in Canada, he took his release on January 9, 1956 only to rejoin the forces on November 18, 1958. He finally retired from the Forces on April 10, 1978. During his fourteen years of service, he was posted to CFB Petawawa (8th Canadian Hussars), Germany (Royal Canadian Dragoons), CFB Chilliwack, BC (2 Service Battalion), and retired from CFB Borden, Ontario. He also served on deployments abroad in Korea, Egypt, and Bermuda. After his service, Bill settled in Coldwater, Ontario and worked for twenty years at the Huronia Reginal Centre in nearby Orillia. He was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion, a member of Coldwater Branch 270 for twenty years. Bill passed away on February 12, 1997. He is buried in the Coldwater Cemetery.
