215 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LYWOOD, Norman F. Norman was born on February 6, 1924, in Lindsay, Ontario. He enlisted with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada on March 30, 1943 and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Shortly after D-Day, Norman landed near Bény-sur-Mer then was wounded in Falaise on August 14, 1944. After recuperating, he returned to the battlefield where he served until the end of the war. He lived with shrapnel in his shoulder for the rest of his life. Norman was discharged on November 5, 1945 and in 1946, returned to England to marry his English sweetheart Gwen. They moved to Lindsay in April 1947 and lived in that area the rest of their lives. He was a member of Sir Sam Hughes Legion Branch 67 for 48 years and served as an Executive member from 1964 to 1975, following which he became 2nd Vice, 1st Vice, and on three separate occasions, President. Norman became a Life Member of the branch in 1982 and was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal in 1991. Norman passed away on November 28, 2007. MACDERMOTT, Robert Scotty “Bob” Bob was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 18, 1918. He immigrated to Canada in July 1930 with his parents and seven siblings aboard the HMS Montcalm. Bob enlisted in the RCASC on June 2, 1941, married his sweetheart Adeline Zaza on August 1, and immediately left for the European Campaign. He returned on March 1, 1946 and began a new life with his bride who soon would bear his son. Bob’s father, Robert MacDermott, served in Borneo during the Great War of 1914-1918. Bob made Toronto his home and he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Oak Ridges Branch 73 of which he was a member for more than fifty years before he passed away on September 8, 2000. LYWOOD, William John H. John was born on January 27, 1922, in Lindsay, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on May 27, 1943 and served in Canada, England, France and Germany with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. He was wounded in action and underwent an operation in the military hospital in Kingston in 1943. He was discharged on March 16, 1946. After the war, John and his family lived in Lindsay for many years before moving to British Columbia. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Sir Sam Hughes Branch 67 until he moved to British Columbia. There he joined Salmon Arm Legion Branch 62. He was a member of The Legion for a total of thirty-seven years before he passed away on April 28, 1999.
