205 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LONG, Orville Albert Orville was born in Wardsville, Ontario on May 14, 1921, and was raised on a small farm in Southwestern Ontario. He attended a small rural school with his brothers and after graduating from grade 8, found work on neighbouring farms. He joined the Army on October 25, 1942, and served with 14 Canadian Hussars, 8th Reconnaissance Regiment. He did not believe that he would live to return from the war, and being in reconnaissance, the odds were not in his favour. He fought at Caen in the later stages of the Battle of Normandy and proceeded southwards to where he was killed on August 27, 1944, in the Battle of the Forest of Lalonde, just North of the village of St. Ouen-du-Tilleul, along with twelve fellow Canadian soldiers. He and the others were buried facing the restaurant “Ma Champagne”. Although his body was moved to the Canadian military cemetery, Bretteville-surLaize, the citizens of St. Ouen erected a pillar on the original burial site of each of the 13 Canadians and inscribed their names. His family members have since visited the grave site and the village to honour his memory. The Silver Cross Medal was presented to Orville’s mother, Mrs. Annie Mae Long. LOTT, Charles Wilfred Charles was born in Brussels, Ontario on July 27, 1896. He was a student at the time of his enlistment in the Air Force (Regular Force) on June 16, 1916, in Toronto. Charles trained in aviation and was flying in Active Service as a pilot of a seaplane. Stationed in Malta, he was on anti-submarine patrol, when nearing the water his plane struck an undiscovered buoy, flipped and was wrecked. Charles was entangled in the wires and drowned. The notice of his death, July 20, 1918, was sent to his mother by Commanding Officer of the Malta Base. He reported that Charles had not served at the base long, but had done excellent work, and had saved a convoy from attack only days earlier. Charles was buried at Valetta with full military honours. He is remembered with honour at Pieta Military Cemetery. LORD, Fred John Fred was born in St. Stephen, NB on January 27, 1950. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1969. He began his career as a Structural Technician and in 1990, during his posting in Masset, BC, he was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in the Construction Maintenance trade. During his military service, he had many postings: three years at CFB Petawawa, Ontario; Lahr, Germany; Gagetown, NB; Moose Jaw, SK; Masset, BC; and Trenton, ON. His career also included a UN peacekeeping tour to Cyprus. During a six-month tour in Cyprus, Fred received a commendation for bravery for putting out a fire where there were cylinders of propane gas in the kitchen of a bar/restaurant. Fred retired from the military in 1992 and joined the federal civil service and was initially employed as the Property Officer in Kingston from 1992 to 1996. In 1996, until his retirement in 2015, Fred was the Property Officer at CFB Trenton. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Masset, BC for two years. Fred passed away on February 11, 2020. He had been a resident of Petawawa and Trenton for 33 years.
