383 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SOLDIERS Hello, my name is Abigail. I am 11 years old and I have lived in Ontario my whole life. I have written this to remind people about the brave soldiers who fought in the First World War. I am very thankful that I was not born during those hard times, but some people were. Imagine trying to live a normal life when there is a world war going on. During Remembrance Day our school does a ceremony to remember the brave women and men who fought in the war. We do a skit on what it was like for them during the war. One student will play the trumpet and we will talk about what Remembrance Day means and the soldiers who died fighting for our freedom. I can’t imagine what my life would be like if those brave soldiers had not fought so hard for us during the war. I am also very thankful to be born in such a peaceful country like Canada. My Great GrandFather was a soldier in the war. His name was Albert William Harding. He was in the trenches for a bit and was also hired as a cook. Just before the war got really bad he got a disease and had to be taken to the hospital. If it weren’t for him being a chef and getting a sickness later on he probably would be dead. He wrote a journal while he was in the war. I have that journal and I want to show you what his first experience was in the trenches fighting for Canada. “I remember this particular night that a sniper’s bullet grazed the edge of my steel helmet while poking my head over the shell.” I am very thankful I did not have to experience that. This I hope gave you a brief idea of what it was like for my Great GrandFather and many other soldiers during the war. So what is Remembrance Day about? It is about remembering the end of the First World War and recalling all the brave soldiers who fought in our Nation’s Defence. We also wear poppies on Remembrance Day because they bloomed on the battlefield of where the First World War ended and it is where many brave soldiers died fighting for Canada. I hope everybody will wear their poppy on Remembrance Day. It feels good when you wear it because you know that you are supporting and remembering the soldiers that fought for you. The Canadian Military is still working hard to keep Canada safe and being prepared for another world war. I will never forget the brave soldiers who fought for Canada’s freedom and safety. I hope you don’t either. Lest We Forget.
