371 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WRIGHT, Duane Harris Duane was born in Shanly, Ontario on June 18, 1921. He enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in January 1943 and served in Canada and the United Kingdom as a rear gunner in the Royal Canadian Air Force 432 Squadron in World War II, flying numerous missions over enemy territory. He was decorated by King George with a medal for bravery. He was released from service in April 1945. In civilian life, he became a self taught, very successful engineer and designer. He was a very accomplished artist. Duane passed away while skiing on January 5, 1975, at the age of 52. WRIGHT, Murry “Dean” Dean was born in Edwardsburg, Ontario on November 4, 1925. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served during World War II with MET 3 (F) Wing, Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada and in Zweibrücken, Germany. He was discharged on August 26, 1972. Dean was a beloved father, husband, and brother. He had a great love of photography, painting and fishing. He once took Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s photograph and later painted his portrait which he gifted to him. Dean was an avid maker of things: a beautiful canoe, speed boat, backyard deck, model cars, and more. Like the whole Wright clan, he was a great storyteller, debater and jokester. He has a great sense of humour and spoke fondly of his time in the Air Force stationed overseas in Germany. Dean passed away on June 28, 1997. WRIGHT, Morris “Manning” Manning was born outside of Prescott, Ontario on October 22, 1924. After several attempts to join the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941, he finally entered service on July 27, 1942, as a sick berth attendant with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) at the age of seventeen and nine months. He served aboard HMCS Arrowhead and was a member of the commissioning crew of HMCS Lanark in 1944 serving with the ship until the summer of 1945. Manning was discharged on November 24, 1945. In addition to being a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Capt A. Roy Brown Branch 192 in Carleton Place, ON, Manning was a former president of the Royal Canadian Naval Association Ottawa-Hull Branch and spearheaded efforts to have HMCS Ottawa (FFH 341) commissioned in Cornwall in 1996. He was also a member of the White EnsignAssociation that was based inAlmonte, ON and a member of the national Battle of Atlantic committee and spoke with students at several high schools. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his volunteer service with Navy League of Canada in support of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and Navy League Cadets. Manning passed away on December 24, 2003.
