363 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WARD, Jack Jack was born in Claremont, Ontario in 1924. He was a proud Canadian and lifelong resident of Claremont. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Airframe Mechanic at the age of nineteen on April 6, 1943. He was stationed overseas in Wales. He was honourably discharged on July 12, 1946. Jack passed away in 2011. WATERS, Earl Edward Earl was born in Toronto, Ontario, on April 2, 1923. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 12, 1942, and served with the 23 Canadian Field Regiment, RCA as a driver mechanic and drove tanks. He served in Holland, France, Belgium and on V-Day in Germany during World War II. He received the France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on March 22, 1946. Earl did not talk much about the war. He became an officer in the Air Cadets as a drill instructor. As a civilian, he became a stone mason then stationary engineer maintaining and operating high pressure boilers. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 302 for fifty years. Earl passed away on January 17, 1997. WARD, Leo Samuel Leo was born in Derbyshire, England on November 27, 1908. He enlisted in the Army on September 4, 1939, leaving his wife and six children, and he was discharged on September 7, 1945. During Leo’s World War II service, he served in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with 11 Field Ambulance and 23 Canadian Field Ambulance, Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. In Scotland, Leo obtained training in anti-gas warfare and commando training, prior to the Dieppe Raid, in preparation for the landing. Leo participated in the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942. On discharge, Leo had attained the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. He was awarded the following medals: 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. After his discharge on September 7, 1945, Leo returned to civilian life with his wife and six children in Guelph, Ontario. Leo and Kate eventually moved west and lived their remaining years in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Leo passed away on August 26, 1968.
