361 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WALLIS, Robin William Robin was born in England on August 29, 1925. He enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) and served in the Pacific with Air Sea Rescue until his discharge in 1945. During the war effort, he received the Defence Medal, 1939-1945 Star and the Overseas Medal. He is a 75-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fonthill Branch 613. Robin has lived in Fonthill, Ontario for most of his life. WARD, Charles Charles was born in England on March 29, 1885. He enlisted in the British Army Royal Engineers on June 11, 1902, and served to 1910. Charles moved to Canada in 1910 and enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on July 18, 1914, with the Canadian Corps of Engineer as a Sapper. He advanced through the ranks to Regimental Sergeant Major. He fought at the Battle of Arras, The Somme, and Ypres during World War I. He was demobilized in 1919. Charles received the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914-1919 Star, General Service Medal and Victory Medal. Charles passed away on May 10, 1974, and his remains are in Toronto. WALTHER, Edwin Louis Rudolph Edwin was born on January 23, 1923, in Kitchener, Ontario. He was the first person in Canada treated for infantile paralysis using Sister Kenny Method, at age eleven, and he recovered well enough to be accepted at lowest medical classification upon volunteering for air force in November 1941. His duties were aircraft maintenance. He served with 427 Lion Squadron (Halifaxes) from February 1943 until approximately April 1944, transferred to Digby, transferred to 412 Falcon Squadron (Spitfires) until approximately July 1945, in Belgium, Germany and Holland. He told his daughter that the night of Germany’s surrender, he and the Captain were the only ones who were not celebrating. He had drawn guard duty, and the Captain decided to stay sober in case any superior officers showed up. They made up for it later. Edwin transferred back to Yorkshire and travel orders home were issued on his birthday, January 23, 1946. He was discharged from service in February 1946. He married Marie Epp on September 30, 1950. They had one daughter. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Edwin passed away on September 23, 1970.
