351 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THOMPSON, James “Jim” Jim was born on July 3, 1895, to James and Christina (McSween) Thompson in Bruce Township, Ontario and attended school at USS #16. He joined the Army with the 160th Overseas Battalion in Tiverton on March 24, 1916 to serve during World War I. He trained in Walkerton and London, Ontario before sailing on the Metagama liner on October 17, arriving in England on October 27, 1916. While overseas, he joined the 4th Machine Gun Battalion and saw service in Belgium, France, and Germany. He was discharged medically fit in Toronto onApril 3, 1919. THOMPSON, Roderick Roderick was born on January 21, 1901, to James and Christina (McSween) Thompson of Bruce Township, Ontario. He was the third son to join the Army. Rod joined the Sappers Pioneer Railway Troops at Camp Borden, Ontario. After training for several months, he left for London, England. He was at Purfleet Camp until returning home in 1918 as he was too young to remain. THOMPSON, John “Jack” Jack, and his twin brother Jim, were born on July 3, 1895 to James and Christina (McSween) Thompson. The family lived in rural Bruce Township. At the time of Jack’s enlistment, he was a bookkeeper. He went to Tiverton, Ontario to join the Army on February 2, 1916 and assigned to the 160th Battalion. Following training, Private Jack Thompson was sent overseas and arrived in Liverpool, England on October 28, 1916. More training followed and in April 1918, Jack’s unit landed in France serving with the 4th Battalion. His unit was returned to England on May 12, 1919 and subsequently Jack, now a Corporal, returned to Canada and was discharged from the Army on June 16, 1919 in Toronto. Jack returned to Bruce County. He passed away on September 20, 1960 and is buried in Purdy’s Cemetery.
