349 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THACKER, Harold Douglas Harold was born in Teeswater, Culross Township, Ontario in 1890. He enlisted in the Army and served with D Company, 160th Bruce Battalion, 5th Canadian Engineers in Canada, France and England during World War I and was gassed in 1918. After his discharge in 1919, he married, had no family, and worked as an upholsterer at Combes Factory in Kincardine. He donated his WorldWar I uniform to Bruce County Museum in Southampton. Harold passed away in 1988. THOMAS, Hector Garnet Hector was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario on September 29, 1915. He enlisted on June 3, 1943, with the No. 1 Canadian Railway Operating Group R.C.E. and served overseas in England duringWorldWar II. He was discharged in March 1946. Allin Mandar wrote a book called “Line Clear For Up Trains”on the work they did. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Smiths Falls Branch 95. Hector passed away in the 1980s. THACKERAY (GARRISON), Lorraine Verne Lorraine was born on January 23, 1934, in North Vancouver, British Columbia. She enlisted on January 24, 1951, in the Royal CanadianAir Force and served in Germany and in Canada as a proud Corporal and until her discharge on January 22, 1957. Lorraine and William Thackeray were married for 63 years and raised four children: Cecile, Theresa, Paul and adopted daughter Margot. Lorraine was a graduate of North Vancouver High School and a gifted athlete in her youth in basketball and baseball. She loved to walk to raise money for cancer research and held official positions for charity organizations. She twice completed the four-day 120 kilometers “Nijmegen” walk for Netherlands and was awarded the “Queen’s Medal”. She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bay Ridges Branch 606 in Pickering for 44 years. Life’s greatest reward was playtime their eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and one great-grandson when travelling across this great country in their motorhome and later shared annual trips with William. Loraine passed away on September 6, 2020, in Pickering and her ashes were brought back to her native British Columbia to rest near her beloved mountains and the Tulameen River.
