347 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TAYLOR, Gordon William “Gord” Gord was born on March 6, 1919, in Uxbridge Township, Ontario. His parents were Jake and Mabel (Evans) Taylor. He married Thelma Slack from Glasgow, ON. They had two children, Garry, born in 1941, and Glenda, born in 1947. Gord served in World War II, from 1942 to 1946 with the Queen’sYork Rangers and the Royal Canadian Army Corp. When he returned home, Gord and Thelma resided in Claremont where he worked at the Sarco factory. In 1946, they bought the restaurant at Old Brock Road and Central Street. In 1952, he began a thriving marine business selling Mercury Outboard Motors and boats. He also leased the service station at Old Brock and Central Street selling English cars. In 1975, they sold the restaurant and Gord moved his marine business to 5015 Old Brock Road until 1980. Then, he converted the building into apartments, and moved with his wife to Orillia, ON until his death in 1986. Gord was also a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Claremont Branch, the Claremont Business Association, and the Masons. He was a well-respected businessman. TAYLOR, Peter Peter was born in Mount Stephen, near Coldwater, Ontario on July 24, 1895, the son of James Sloss and Francis Ellen (White) Taylor. On February 12, 1916, he enlisted in Coldwater with the 157th Overseas Battalion (Simcoe Foresters) of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was 21 years old and single. He listed his trade as labourer and had no previous military experience. Private Peter Taylor sailed on the SS Cameronia to arrive in England on October 28, 1916. He was taken on strength by the 116th Canadian Infantry Battalion and landed in France on March 15, 1917. In October 1917, he was hospitalized and diagnosed with trench fever. Sequels from the illness had him declared unfit for further service. He was repatriated to Canada and discharged on April 11, 1918. Peter passed away in 1963 and is buried in Sudbury, Ontario. TAYLOR, James Edmund Nelson “Nick” Nick was born in Fesserton near Coldwater, Ontario, on November 27, 1917, the son of Edmund and Susan (James) Taylor. He had four sisters. During World War II, Nick enrolled with the Canadian Army on August 31, 1940, initially joining the Victoria Rifles of Canada, and later transferring to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served in Canada, England, France and Holland. He was single when he went overseas but met and married his wife in England and brought home a newborn son. Back in Canada, he was discharged on September 24, 1945. After his return to civilian life, he worked for a long time at the Coldwater timber yard and raised his family in the Coldwater area. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coldwater Branch 270 for many years. Nick passed away on December 26, 1962.
