345 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SWINFORD, Samuel James “Sam” Sam was born in Filkins, Oxfordshire, England on April 27, 1888. He enlisted in the Army on November 11, 1915 in Toronto, leaving behind a wife and three small children. Sam was one of five brothers who joined up. Initially, he was recruited into the 74th Battalion and due to medical reasons, he was reassigned to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops, A Company where he served until he was discharged. While serving in all of the major CEF battles in the last eighteen months of the war, Sam was gassed several times. His weakened condition left him vulnerable to the Influenza epidemic. He contracted the condition in December 1918 and was not declared fit until March 1919. He was discharged by reason of demobilization on April 26, 1919. Returning to Toronto, Sam was employed by the City Works Department until his death in 1939 at the age of 51. Sam had been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. TAYLOR, Edward Arthur “Ted” Ted was born in Plymouth, Devonshire, England on October 31, 1890. He was a Barnardo boy, coming to Canada at an early age. He worked on a farm as a labourer and later as a bridge builder. Ted enlisted in the Army on January 11, 1916 during World War I and served in England and France with D Company, Bruce Battalion 160th and in Canada, France and England with 47 Battalion. In service, he was wounded in September 1918. After discharge in 1919, he married and had four children. He worked for the Department of Highways and was a volunteer fireman. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ferris Branch 431 for fifteen years. Ted passed away in 1961. TANNER, William Henry “Bill” Bill was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 23, 1925. He worked as a machine operator until he enlisted in the Armed Forces (Regular Force) in 1943 at the age of seventeen. Bill served with Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry Highlanders (Fencibles) in Canada, United Kingdom, and Europe. He served occupation in Germany until his release in 1946. Bill received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Bill was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11 and then Branch 389. He returned home to meet and marry the love of his life Bernice in 1948. He raised his family in east Toronto and spent his later years in Havelock, Ontario. Bill passed away on July 15, 2020, at the age of 95.
