343 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STUART, Frederick Douglas Frederick was born in Flesherton, Ontario on November 3, 1919. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 24, 1940, and served with the Canadian Provost Corps and Royal Canadian Artillery. He was a qualified surveyor class C (Field Guns) serving in Continental Europe and the United Kingdom during World War II. He was discharged on February 7, 1948. He returned to farming and was a cattle buyer and cattle trucker. Frederick passed away on September 25, 1996. SWACKHAMER, Frederick Park “Fred” Fred was born on June 20, 1925, in Toronto. He joined the Canadian Army (Regular Force) with Royal Hamilton Light Infantry on January 28, 1944. After basic training, he was sent overseas and served in Belgium and Holland as a radio operator and mastering the art of Morse code. On November 21, 1944, Fred was captured and spent the next five months as a Prisoner of War at Camp Stalag X1B in Germany. After five months of strenuous labour, a straw bed of fleas, and scarce food leaving him thirty pounds lighter, Fred made a decision: “I want to go home!” When the guards let some men kick a soccer ball around one day, Fred kicked it into the trees, went after it, kicked it back out on the field and then kept going. A few weeks later, he met some allied soldiers and was sent to England. One month later, World War II ended. Fred was released from the military on July 31, 1945, after being decorated with four medals: France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal andWar Medal 1939-1945 and 1939-1945 Star. Fred now resides in Sutton West, Ontario. SUTTON, Arthur Grassum “Art” Art was born December 24, 1915, in Toronto to Art and Doris Sutton. He enlisted on October 5, 1943 with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II serving on HMCS York, HMCS Montcalm, HMCS Chippawa, HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Stadacona (Brockville), HMCS Protector, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Peregrine, HMCS New Glasgow, HMCS Peregrine and the HMCS York. Art was discharged on February 14, 1946. He received the following medals: Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Silver War Medal 1939-1945, Atlantic Star, and 1939-1945 Star. He was married to Kay (Titterson), and they had three children together. They lived and raised their family in Toronto and were married for over fifty years. Before enlisting, he was employed by the Royal York Hotel as a Page Boy and then a Bell Hop. After being discharged, he returned to the Royal York Hotel as a Bell Hop and then as Manager of Services. He retired in 1976 with over 45 years of service with the Hotel. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coronation Branch 286, where he received 25-year service pin. Art passed away on March 2, 1995 and is buried at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Toronto.
