327 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SCOTT, Heather Carole Heather was born in Moose Creek, Ontario on September 10, 1940. She enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) in 1958 and served in Canada as Radar Op in Lac St. Denis, Quebec. She was discharged in 1961. Heather is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Westboro Branch 480. SHEPPARD, William James “Bill” Bill was born on July 8, 1913, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of William and Leonora. His family moved to Montreal where Bill completed his education. He joined the Canadian Militia (BlackWatch) in 1929 while he was both working and studying Commercial Law and Accounting. He enlisted in 1939 at the outbreak of war and joined the 1st Battalion of the Black Watch (RHR). In August 1940, he was sent to the United Kingdom. During the course of the war, Bill was returned to Canada on two or three occasions for additional training. Once, while in Canada, he married Frances Dentford Moore on July 13, 1943 in Toronto. While on leave in 1944, his son “Billie” was born on July 9. He never saw his son again. Fighting through the Netherlands and into Germany, Bill took part in Operation Blockbuster on February 25, 1945. The intention was to take the high ground near the town of Kalkar. His battalion succeeded on its objective but there were many casualties on both sides. Lieutenant William James Sheppard was killed in action on February 26, 1945 fighting in the Hochwald Forest. He is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek, the Netherlands. SHAW, Walter Lawrence Walter was born in Matchedash Township near Coldwater, Ontario, on December 3, 1922, the son of Fred and Maude (Bolyea) Shaw. He was the second of five children and the only boy. He lived on the family farm until he enrolled in the Canadian military under the National Resources Military Act on February 3, 1944. He joined the Army (Regular Force) as a gunner with the Royal Canadian Artillery and served in Canada and England. He returned to Canada and was discharged on May 2, 1946. After his return to civilian life, he worked as a welder with Canadian Pacific Railway while still working with his wife on the farm he bought from his parents. Walter retired from the railway as a foreman in 1983. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coldwater Branch 270 for more than 25 years. Walter passed away on April 22, 2003.
