321 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RUTTAN, Milton John Milton was born in Bracebridge, Ontario on October 12, 1920. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in World War II with his twin brother on Christmas Day, 1943. After completing basic training, both he and his brother were sent home to work the family farm as their parents were seniors and two other brothers were already overseas. He served in Canada with the Queen’s Own Rifles until his discharge in 1945. Milton was one of the Charter members for Branch 161 of The Royal Canadian Legion and although he never served as an Executive, he was one of the most respected and valued members of the Branch for his entire life. Milton was a member of the Fife and Drum band in the early days of the Branch and then later served for over 40 years as the Pipe Major for the Branch’s Pipes and Drums Band. He was honoured to have been awarded a Life Membership of the Royal Canadian Legion. Milton passed away on December 20, 2006. RUTTAN, Phillip Beaverton “Phil” Phil was born in Bracebridge, Ontario on May 10, 1948. He enrolled with the Cadet Instructors List in 1979 serving as Supply Officer and Training Officer. He served with 658 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Bracebridge until his release in 1984. Throughout his service with the Legion, he has been instrumental in various renovations at the Branch. Phil’s love of cooking made him a requested chef for various private and public functions as well as the monthly Sunday Breakfasts which commonly fed over 200 people in four hours. In 2013, Phil was presented with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161 Bus Brazier Legionnaire of theYear Award. He is a 22-year member of Central Muskoka Branch 161. Phil is the son of Milton Ruttan. RUTTAN, Peter Thomas Peter was born in Bracebridge, Ontario, on November 19, 1968. His military service includes being an air cadet from 1979 to 1984 and an infantry soldier with the B Company, Grey and Simcoe Foresters from 1984 to 1986. In 1994, he reenlisted and assisted in forming a new army cadet corps in Bracebridge, served as the operations officer and acting Commanding Officer (CO) for the Canadian Rangers-Ontario in 1997-1998 and has since then served as the CO for four army cadet corps in Ontario: Bracebridge once, Ottawa twice, and Brockville once. In 1995, Peter began volunteering with a Veterans group in Baysville, Ontario which eventually the torch of leadership was passed to him, and he continues to carry to this day. In 2016, he personally undertook and lead a team to redesign and enhance the cenotaph in Baysville, including creating a Facebook page “Baysville Veterans”. He is a 36-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Central Muskoka Branch 161. In 2017, he was awarded a Life Membership of the Royal Canadian Legion for his service to the communities of Bracebridge and Baysville. Peter is the son of Phillip Ruttan, and the grandson of Milton Ruttan.
