317 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROPPEL, Gordon Eldon Gordon was born in Bruce Township, Ontario on December 2, 1905. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in Canada during World War II. He was discharged on May 10, 1946. Gordon was married and had six children. He was a carpenter and a mechanic. Gordon passed away on April 7, 1982. RUTLEDGE, Stanley Stanley was born in Morris Township, Huron County, Ontario on November 9, 1892. He was a teamster at the time of his enlistment in January 1916 with the 161st Huron Battalion, C.E.F. He embarked from Halifax in November 1916 on the Lapland. He joined the Canadian Machine Gun Corp and during the month of January 1917, he was hospitalized with Rheumatic Fever. When he recovered, he was sent to France to join the 3rd Bn. C.M.G. He suffered with three bouts of influenza at the end of 1918 and February 1919 and was discharged in April 1919. He returned to Brussels and lived with his brother for a time until his marriage to Margaret. He worked at the Ament factory for a time. He and his wife opened a pool room and diner. Stanley was awarded the War Service Badge. He was a Charter Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 formed in 1931. Stanley died in July 1954 and is buried in Brussels Cemetery. ROWSWELL, Daniel Daniel was born on July 12, 1891, in Taverton, Bruce County, Ontario to Charles and Sara Jane Rowswell. At some point in time the family moved to Tarbutt Township in the District of Algoma, east of Sault Ste. Marie. On his attestment paper, Daniel stated that he was a farmer. On February 17, 1916, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Btn in Sault Ste. Marie. He sailed for England on August 8, 1916 and was transferred to the 124th Pioneer Btn and the 10th Canadian Engineers in the last year of the war. Daniel saw service in France and Belgium. After the war, he remained in England where he had an attack of appendicitis that put him in a hospital for a couple of weeks. He was shipped back home and discharged in Toronto on May 23, 1919 and awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He returned to the farm and in May 1927 he married Sadie McCoy and they had two children. Daniel passed away on January 13, 1970 and was buried in the Port Findlay Cemetery, not far from the farm. A military stone marks his grave.
