305 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RAAFLAUB, Jack “Doug” Jack was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on July 19, 1938. His father, Reinold, was both a First and Second World War Veteran, having served in both the Army and Navy, respectively. Jack joined the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Artillery, in Kingston, Ontario, on February 17, 1956, and completed basic training in Utopia, NB. His first posting was to Camp Petawawa, Ontario, with W Battery 4 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, and during the next few years he participated in numerous exercises, notably the emergency decontamination efforts at Chalk River Nuclear Plant 1958. In 2008, he was recognized by the Minister of National Defence for his contribution with a certificate of Recognition for Exceptional Service of National Importance. Jack also served with 1 LOC location battery in Winnipeg and later with the US Army at Fort Sill, special operations. During the FLQ Crisis, Jack was tasked with providing security to government ministers. He released from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1976 and worked at Point Lepreau Nuclear Plant in New Brunswick and later started his own construction business. Jack and Shirley have been married for 61 years and have three children and three grandchildren. He is a 22-year member of St. Andrews Legion Branch 8 New Brunswick. RAAFLAUB, Morley Floyd Staff Sergeant (ret’d) Morley Floyd Raaflaub was born in Mount Forest, Ontario, on October 12, 1928. After completion of his studies, he joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery as part of the Canadian Army. After completing basic and trades training as a Gunner, he was shipped off to Korea and commenced a six-month tour from 1952 to 1953. While in Korea, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps where he became a cook. Morley served for eighteen years in the Canadian Army until he took his discharge in 1967. With his background as a cook, he opened a catering business in Horseshoe Valley, Ontario. Later he became the caterer at the Government Services Centre in Innisfil, Ontario. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Clearbrook Branch for eight years. Morley passed away on July 3, 1988, leaving behind his wife Laura, four children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. RAAFLAUB, Melville Melville was born on March 19, 1926 in Orillia, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in Hamilton, Ontario in 1943, along with his father Reinold. On completion of basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, he was assigned to a ship. He served on the High Seas during World War II. During his two-year stint in the Navy, Melville participated in a number of runs to the Caribbean to combat German U-boats, which were actively harassing allied ships. These patrols were long, tedious tours punctuated with instant terror upon sighting of a U-boat, more often than not a false sighting. With the end of the war, Melville was discharged in 1945 and returned to civilian life. Sadly, he passed away in his fifties.
