303 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PLOWMAN, Allan D. Allan was born in Gibraltar on February 12, 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force on September 2, 1941, in the United Kingdom and was sent for training to the United States and then to Canada where he graduated as a Flight Lieutenant, Air Bomber. He was then posted to the United Kingdom and joined Squadron 298, Group 38. He was then posted to India where he stayed until discharged in September 1946. He liked Canada and immigrated, starting a long career in accounting. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1967 and was a Life Member of Centennial Branch 614 in Toronto and Westboro Branch 480 in Ottawa. Allan passed away on April 4, 2015. RAAFLAUB, Donald Kaydon “Don” Gunner (ret’d) Kaydon “Don” Raaflaub was born on September 5, 1932, in Orillia, Ontario. After his studies, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Artillery in 1949. He completed trades training at the Royal Canadian School of Artillery in Picton, Ontario and was posted to 127th MediumAnti-Aircraft Battery stationed in Picton as a gunner in fire control centre. Later, Don was sent to West Germany as part of the 27th Infantry Brigade Group where among his duties had the honour of being part of the Queen’s Coronation procession in June 1953. Upon his return to Canada, Don participated in a nuclear battlefield exercise between 1955 and 1957 in the Nevada desert, where he was exposed to an atomic blast while in a trench at ground level. Don was one of 487 Canadian soldiers during this period used to study the effects of a nuclear blast on soldiers in the field. Don served approximately eight years in the Army and upon his discharge moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He later moved back to Ontario and worked for MacLean Hunter as a printer and proof-reader. Don passed away on October 17, 1992, survived by his wife Carolyn (Davey) and their five children. PURCHASE, James H. “Jim” Jim was born in Lamaline, Newfoundland on August 21, 1940. After high school, Jim did one summer semester at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) focusing on teaching methods and then taught grades six and seven for one year. He enlisted in the Air Force in November 1959 and trained as a Meteorological Observer. After five years of service, he returned to college and trained as a Marine Engineer. Jim was discharged in October 1964. He was past President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 and was awarded Life Membership. He was also member of The Royal Canadian Legion Dr W. C. (Bill) Little M. M. Branch 147 in Barrie, Ontario and was also a member and past president of RCAFA 441 (Huronia) Wing in Barrie.
