297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PERRY, Robert Allen “Al” Al was born on October 4, 1923, in Windsor, Ontario. On March 7, 1941, Al enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of seventeen. He was commissioned in September 1943. He was an Airforce Bomber and was posted to the 640 Squadron in 1944, in Leconfield, England. Al completed a tour of operations (34 trips) in 1944. His crew was selected to be a part of the Elite Pathfinder Force but decided to take a break. Al then became an instructor of Air Bombing and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on March 15, 1945 for actions while on operations with 640 Squadron. On his return home, Al graduated from university with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree of Education. He became a teacher and later a principal at many of the elementary schools in Windsor over a thirty-year span. Al married Vera on September 11, 1948. He was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255 and Riverside Minor Hockey. Al was a member of the Dominion Institute that helps bring Veterans to schools for speaking engagements. He spoke on Remembrance Day at different schools until he was 85. Al passed away on February 9, 2017. PETERS, Howard Leroy Howard was born on December 10, 1896, in Toronto, the third child of a family of seven. His father Albert Peters came from Udora, Ontario, his mother Mary Mapes was from Richmond Hill. The family moved from Toronto to a small town north of Toronto in the early 1900s. Howard followed his older brother Ernest Albert (Burt) Peters in joining the Canadian Infantry in 1914. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Valcartier, Quebec at the age of seventeen. Howard was a Lance-Corporal in the 3rd Battalion. Howard was sent to England and on to Belgium where he was killed in action at the Battle of Sanctuary Wood on June 13, 1916, at the age of 19. He was Memorialized at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 18-24-26-30 Belgium. PETERS, Donald Ross Donald was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 1, 1941. He enlisted in the Navy (Regular Force) on October 26, 1959 and served with Fraser Division. He served for one and a half years in the Halifax area and was subsequently awarded a medical discharge due to a stomach ailment in 1962. He returned home to Toronto and worked as a pipefitter-sprinkler systems. He moved to Fonthill in 1993 and commuted to work. Don and his wife raised three children. He lived in Vancouver for three years.
