295 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PERCIVAL, John Douglas John was born in Sarnia, Ontario on October 24, 1924. He enlisted in the Army Regular Force on March 10, 1943 in London, Ontario and did his basic training in Chatham, Ontario. He first saw action in the Italian campaign with RCR 1st Division. He was wounded at the battle of the Lamone River. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to the front lines. In early 1945, his unit was transferred to Northwest Europe. His unit was involved in the action leading to the liberation of Apeldoorn. He was discharged on March 29, 1943. After the war, he returned home to Sarnia where he went to work for Imperial Oil. He developed a love for aviation and obtained his private pilot’s license. He then built his own airplane and pursued his love of flying until the age of ninety. With the support of the Veteran’s Independence Program, John continues to live in the family home and remains active in the local Legion Branch activities. He is a 21-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Sarnia Branch 62. PERRIE, Leslie William Leslie was born in Grey Township, Huron County, Ontario near Cranbrook on April 13, 1897. He was a farm labourer before he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on March 21, 1916, at the age of nineteen in Brussels with the 161st Battalion. He was sent overseas eight months later and was a month in England before arriving in France with the 58th Canadian Infantry and then the 3rd C.E. Battalion. Leslie was wounded in June 1917 with a gunshot wound to the arm and back but returned to duty by August, to be wounded again in the arm. He spent time in hospital in England and in France. He did not return to duty and was discharged and sent home on February 5, 1919, on demobilization. He received the Good Conduct Badge. Leslie made his home in Edmonton after his return and was employed at a Ford car dealership. He married but had no family. Leslie passed away on October 26, 1970, at the age of 73, in Edmonton. PERCY, William George George was born onApril 12, 1897 in Kinlough, Bruce County, Ontario. His father was Thomas George Percy and had a farm. He enlisted in the Army on June 10, 1918 and was attached to the 1st Depot Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment) in London for training. The war ended and George was discharged on January 22, 1919. He returned to Glamis, Ontario and married. After his wife died, he and his family moved to London, Ontario.
