283 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MISSEN, John William John was born in Plumstead, Kent, England on August 4, 1892, the son of William Henry and Evelina Charlotte (Lord) Missen. John was the second oldest of five brothers and one sister. On November 6, 1914, John enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 24th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in Montreal, Quebec. After some training, Private Missen sailed aboard the SS Cameronia arriving in England on May 20, 1915. After further preparations, he landed in France on September 15. On July 3, 1917, in the area of Hill 70, Liévin, France, Private Missen was hit by shrapnel, fracturing his left femur and ultimately resulting in the amputation of his leg. John was discharged as “medically unfit” on February 17, 1919, in Toronto. He married Rose Edith Henderson on September 27, 1919. They remained in Toronto, raising four sons and two daughters. John William Missen died on August 16, 1961 and is buried at Pine Hills Cemetery in Toronto. He had been a resident of Toronto from 1919 until his passing. MOFFAT, William Frederick William was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 24, 1917. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with C.I.C. Perth Regiment for the period of March 1, 1943, to February 27, 1946 during World War II and was deployed in Italy, Belgium, France and Holland. He received certificate and Bronze Lion for Bravery which was presented to him by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. When he returned to Toronto in 1946, he brought with him the nick name “Sergeant Sam”. He worked for the Borough of East York as Supervisor in the Works Department where he retired from after 36 years of service. In 1981, he moved to Sutton, Ontario. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Todmorden Branch 10 in East York for over 50 years. “Sergeant Sam” passed away on January 5, 2002, in Sutton. MISSEN, William Henry William was born in Walworth, Surrey, England on June 30, 1867, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Feakens) Missen. William was the youngest of five boys and two girls. William, his wife Evelina, four sons, and one daughter arrived in Canada in April 1905. A fifth son was born in Canada in 1906. Understating his age by six years, William joined the Army (Regular Force) with the 208th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in Toronto, on April 13, 1916, during World War I. Private William Missen sailed from Halifax aboard the SS Justicia, arriving in England on May 14, 1917. He returned to Canada in December 1917 and was discharged from service on January 24, 1918 “in consequence of being overage”; the army having determined he was actually fifty years old. William passed away in Toronto on January 1, 1935. He is buried at Prospect Cemetery in Toronto.
