277 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McKEEVER, Andrew Edward Andrew was born on August 21, 1894, in Listowel, Ontario to Bella Henderson and William McKeever. He attended Toronto’s Central Technical and worked as a teller until 1916. In October 1915, Andrew joined the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, as a private until November 1916. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 25, 1916. He was accepted into the Royal Flying Corps and sailed for training in England. On December 5, he was commissioned as a probationary lieutenant assigned on May 28, 1917 to No. 11 Squadron flying obsolete F.F.2’s. Shortly after he flew Bristol F2A fighters (Busfit). He was a photographic reconnaissance as well as becoming an ace by destroying many planes. The awards he received are Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre (France). He was awarded with Bar of the Military Cross in October 1917. He gained the nickname Hawkeye in his years of service from 1914 to 1919. Following the war he accepted a job managing an air field in Mineola, NewYork. However, a car accident near Mitchell, Ontario resulted in a broken leg and he died from complications on December 25, 1919. McLEAN, Arthur Arthur was born in Morris Township, Ontario on March 16, 1922, the son of Roderick and Daisy McLean. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on May 6, 1941, and served as a Trooper with the 27th Armed Regiment, Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment, RCAC. He was a driver of a Sherman tank on D-Day. Arthur was fatally wounded in battle in Barbery, France on August 12, 1944. He is buried in Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in France. McKENZIE, John “Johnny” Little is known about John McKenzie who was raised in Kincardine Township by Eliza and Jennie Hutchinson on what is known as the Old Maids Hill. He farmed and worked for other farmers before enlisting in the Army in World War II and serving overseas. After the war, John returned to the area and drove a creamery truck. He lived with Annie Montgomery in Bruce Township, before moving to Glamis and then to the town of Lucknow. John is buried in Lochalsh cemetery in Huron Township.
