269 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McAREE, Susan Elizabeth Susan was born on October 3, 1950 in Windsor, Ontario, where she was raised, educated and employed. She volunteered as administration officer with 2828 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in October 1985, due to the retirement of the former Administration Officer and her son, Colin, joining the unit. Attending all required military officer courses and additional training, canoe, range safety, winter indoctrination, etc., Susan enjoyed engaging the Cadets in weekend camp exercises in the bush, as well as training at Ipperwash and Cedar Springs rifle ranges. One of the greatest accomplishments was enrolling eligible Cadets in summer camps at Ipperwash, Borden, Trenton, Banff, England and Morocco then listening to their wild and wonderful experiences. Retiring in June 2011 after 25 years, there are many fond memories and pictures to reflect on. Susan is a 35-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Riverside Branch 255 in Windsor. McCARTY, Daniel John Daniel was born on December 11, 1921 in Hilton Beach, a small community on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to Daniel and Annie McCarty. On his attestment paper, he stated that he was a mail carrier by occupation. Daniel joined the Royal CanadianAir Force on May 30, 1941 and trained as an air-gunner. While on a mission over Germany on the night of August 2-3, 1943 his Halifax JA696 aircraft was icing and the pilot ordered the crew to bail out. Daniel’s position on that flight was rear gunner. Their plane crashed near Wiegersen, Germany and post war investigations indicated that not everyone was able to leave the disabled plane. Daniel’s remains are buried in the BecklingenWar Cemetery, Lower Saxony, Germany and his name is inscribed on the Hilton Beach cenotaph. McARTHUR, Robert Melvin “Jiggs” Robert was born in Tobermory, Ontario on April 2, 1922. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on April 28, 1941 and served with 1st Hussars, 17th Duke of York RCH in France and in Germany. Robert received the 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, France and Germany Star and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After his discharge on October 6, 1945, he returned to his home in Tobermory. He married Margaret Ritchie and they raised a family of seven children on the family farm in St. Edmunds Township. Robert passed away on November 7, 1994.
