267 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAZUREK, Frederic Michael Frederic was born in Kitchener, Ontario on August 12, 1936 to Michael and Leona (Ciepielusz) Mazurek along with five siblings: Harry, Mary, Dorothy, Connie and Michael. He attended St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic School and then St. Jerome’s High School. In 1956, Fred joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) and after three years, in 1959, received an honourable discharge. On November 20, 1959, he was sworn in as police constable with the Kitchener Police Department. He married Donna (Letson) and they raised five children. Over the course of his career, he was heavily involved in all departments of Police Service and on May 1, 1984, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Police Operations. After 34 years of service, Deputy Chief Frederic Mazurek retired on April 30, 1992. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and family life especially being a grandfather. Fred’s older brother Harry served in World War II and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. On April 12, 2016, Frederic passed away at the age of 79 and is buried in Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo, Ontario. McAREE, James Joseph “Jim” Jim was born on August 18, 1944 in Windsor where he was raised, educated and employed. He enjoyed football in high school and enrolled in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserves at the HMCS Hunter. Following high school, Jim enrolled in the USA Army, 1st Infantry Red “1”, Armoured Division, serving in Germany for eighteen months. After six years of service, he returned home. When Jim’s son, Colin, turned thirteen years old, he joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps sponsored by The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255. Jim volunteered as supply officer. Over nineteen years of service, employed as training officer and retiring as Commanding Officer, Jim enjoyed the many challenges of each Officer and Training Course as well as becoming instructor for Range Safety, Abseil and Winter Indoctrination courses. Jim has many wonderful memories of the Cadets as they grew up and developed, and the large number who went on to join the Canadian Regular Forces – Army. He is a 35-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Riverside Branch 255. MAZUREK, Harry Michael Harry was born in Kitchener, Ontario, on July 24, 1922, to Michael and Leona (Ciepielusz) Mazurek, and had five siblings. After completing school, World War II became an event that drew his friends to new adventures and Harry became a part of it. He joined up and was attached to the Essex Scottish Regiment and was sent to Camp Borden for basic training. He then went on to Halifax, NS and was shipped to Aldershot, England to continue training. He landed in France in early July 1944 in a battle near Caen. A and B Companies retreated and C and D Companies were lost. Harry and his unit were captured and were marched to Poland where he remained as a Prisoner of War until his release in April 1945. He was discharged on August 15, 1945 and returned to Kitchener. Harry married Fernande Marie (Giguere) and they raised two children. Harry worked as a foreman at Electrohome in Kitchener and in his spare time, enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking, and travel. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Harry passed away on September 12, 2001 and is buried in the Veterans section “D” in Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo.
