259 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MADILL (TURNER), Lillian Kathleen “Kay” Kay was born on November 7, 1922, in Stouffville, Ontario. She joined the Royal Canadian Navy on June 16, 1943, when she was 21 years old. She finished high school and attended one year at Dominion Business College in Toronto. When she enlisted, she started as a Probationary WREN and when discharged she had become a Leading WREN Writer, pay division. During most of her service, she was stationed in Quebec City. She was discharged on September 14, 1945 with a settlement under the V.L.A. (small holding) or credit for home or furniture. Kay married Bob Madill in Stouffville on August 2, 1945. Within a couple of years, they moved back to Claremont, Ontario. Their employment was managing the Claremont General Store and lived in the apartment above the store for almost four years then built a house next door to the Claremont Legion Branch of which Kay and Bob were both members. Kay’s years of military service were a very special time in her life that both her and her family are very proud of. As of January 2022, Kay was the only living original member of Branch 483. MANDENO, Albert Frederick “Pat” Pat was born on July 1, 1914, in England, the son of William Mandeno. He came to Canada alone at the age of fifteen, in 1929. When Pat first arrived from England, he worked for room and board at a farm near Holland Centre. He then went logging on Fitzwilliam Island. He enlisted in the Army Regular Force with the 97th Battery Canadian Field Regiment as a Bombardier on September 9, 1939, at the age of 25. He served in England, France, Holland, and Belgium from 1941 toAugust 9, 1945, when he was discharged. Following his return to Canada, Pat married Myrtle White and they had two children. He worked at the RCA Factory and then at Black Clawson Kennedy. Pat passed away on June 8, 1997 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound, Ontario. MADILL, Robert Decker “Bob” Bob was born on January 6, 1922, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He completed grade 9 in high school and then started working as a repairman at the Home Service Bureau in Saskatoon. Bob volunteered on June 5, 1940, for three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. Rate of entry Ordinary Seaman, his basic training was for eight weeks at the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in Saskatoon. Bob served on several ships including the Prince Robert, Ville de Quebec, Stadacona, and the HMCS Givenchy. His travels included the Atlantic, Pacific, Africa, Burma (Southeast Asia) and Italy. He also attended the HMCS Cornwallis Naval Training Base in Halifax, NS several times. Bob received an honourable discharge on August 17, 1945. He had served 36 months on the high seas. Bob was also awarded medals, 2 stars and 4 clasps for 1939-1945, Atlantic, Africa, Canadian Veterans Service Medal. On leave before his discharge, he was hired by the railway in Saskatoon. He then married Kathleen Turner from Stouffville. They returned from the West to Claremont where they ran the Claremont General Store and were active in the Claremont Legion Branch 483. Bob passed away on August 9, 2009.
