253 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MacDONALD, Katherine Maud Katherine was born in Brantford, Ontario on January 18, 1893, to Angus and Mary Maud MacDonald. She graduated as an RN from Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario in May 1915. She enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the Canadian Army Medical Corps as a Nursing Sister on April 3, 1917, in London. She proceeded overseas during World War I and arrived in the United Kingdom on April 16, 1917. She initially was posted in England to Eastbourne’s 14th Canadian General Hospital followed by Brighton’s 10th Canadian Stationary Hospital. She proceeded to France on January 28, 1918 and her posting at No. 1 Canadian General Hospital in Étaples, France. She was the first Canadian Nursing Sister to be killed when there was a German air raid on May 19, 1918. She is buried in the Étaples Military Cemetery. Her mother was recognized as a Silver Cross Mother in 1939 and was introduced to King George and Queen Elizabeth during their tour of Canada. MacLENNAN, Alex Alex was born in Glamis, Bruce County, Ontario on August 4, 1918, the son of Robert and Hilda. He joined the Army in July 1941 and served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he and his wife settled in Glamis and operated a garage. They had one son. MacLEAN, Lawrence Lawrence was the son of Rita MacLean, and raised by his grandparents Dan and Margaret MacLean who lived on Lot 31, Concession 2 in Bruce Township, Ontario. Like many of his friends, he enlisted in the Army during World War II eventually finding himself overseas. After he returned, he married Byrdie Ball of Kincardine, Ontario. Lawrence worked out of London for the railroad. His date of death is unknown, but he is buried in London, Ontario.
