237 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LARSON, Elmer Elmer was born in Risor, Norway on June 10, 1904. He enlisted in the Army on February 23, 1940, and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in England and in Northwest Europe during World War II. He was discharged on September 11, 1945. Elmer also lived in Timmins and Kirkland Lake for roughly ten years before the war. He was acquainted withWally Floody of “The Great Escape” fame. Elmer was a 21-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elliot Lake Branch 561. He passed away on July 19, 1978. LAUGHLIN, Norman Gareven Norman was born on January 17, 1925, in Matchedash Township near Coldwater, Ontario, the son of Albert and Rachel (Prince) Laughlin. He had six brothers and five sisters. During World War II, he joined the Canadian Army’s Infantry Corps on January 18, 1944. Private Laughlin spent his first months of training at No. 20 Canadian Army (Basic) Training Centre in Brampton, Ontario before going overseas with the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. On October 13, 1944, he was captured by German forces at Bergen-op-Zoom in Holland and was held as Prisoner of War at Stalag IIB near Hammerstein, Poland, where he was forced to work in a mine. He was released in Hamburen, Germany on April 12, 1945. With the end of the war, he was discharged on August 14, 1945, and returned to the Coldwater area where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He married Elva Davis and had one child and three stepchildren. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, an active member of Coldwater Branch 270 for twenty years. Norman passed away on September 3, 2009, at the age of 84. LARSON, Evelyn May Evelyn was born in London, England on May 3, 1919. She enlisted in the Army on September 16, 1940, and served with the Auxiliary Territorial Service in England until her discharge on November 12, 1943. She was a 53-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elliot Lake Branch 561. Evelyn resided in Timmins and Elliot Lake, Ontario from 1946 until her death on September 13, 2010.
