229 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KEMSLEY, George George Kemsley was born on March 30, 1894, in Sarnia Township, Ontario, to John and Annie (McGary) Kemsley. He enlisted on February 9, 1916, in Sarnia with the 149th Battalion CEF. He proceeded overseas on March 28, 1917 and was assigned to the 47th Battalion for service in Europe and joined the unit “in the field” on March 9, 1918. He received a gunshot wound to his left arm during action at the Battle of Arras on September 2, 1918. Initially treated at Boulogne General Hospital, he was transferred to Canterbury Hospital in England where his arm was amputated above the elbow. He was invalided to Canada on February 2, 1919 and discharged in Toronto on May 13, 1919. He married Etta Maria Wilson in June 1921 in Point Edward, Ontario. George passed away on September 20, 1951, and was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Sarnia. KENNEDY, John Earl “Jack” Jack was born on May 15, 1916 in Renfrew, Ontario, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Kennedy. After graduating high school, he took his apprenticeship as a printer at one of the Renfrew, Ontario newspapers. In 1941, he joined the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment Militia. On June 11, 1942, Jack married Enid Grenier in Renfrew. He enlisted in the Army in Ottawa on June 16, 1942 and served in the Royal Canadian Signal Corps at the Pacific Command in Vancouver, BC where his unit kept watch for submarine activity along the west coast. They installed signal towers from Blaine, Washington to Alaska. During his time in the military, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Jack took his discharge from the military in February 1947. After military service, he went back to his trade working as a printer for newspapers in Arnprior and Renfrew, Ontario until his death on April 3, 1980. KENNEDY, Goldwyn Alexander Goldwyn was the son of Ray and Elizabeth (Kirktown) Kennedy who lived at Lot 30, Concession 2 in Bruce Township, Ontario. After Goldwyn’s father found work in Nova Scotia, Goldwyn lived with an uncle, Alex Kirktown, until he decided to enlist in the Army in Middleton, Nova Scotia, onAugust 12, 1941. He subsequently changed his arm of service and joined the Air Force. He was sent to England. A mechanic, he was stationed in England where he serviced the Lancaster Bombers.
