227 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KAYSMITH, Murray Bruce Murray was born in Toronto on February 4, 1951. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Forces) on May 8, 1968, where he took his basic training at CFB Gagetown with the Blackwatch Depot. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Blackwatch on graduation. In 1969, he was stationed in Cypress, UN Peacekeeping – Infantry. In 1970, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion Canadian Guards at CFB Petawawa. In 1971, he was posted to 3rd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment at CFB Petawawa. In 1976, he was stationed in Baden-Baden, Germany with the Infantry. In 1981, he remustered to Canadian Signal Corps and posted to CFB Borden. In 1986, he was posted to Communications Squadron at CFB Comox, BC. He retired in Comox on July 12, 1992, and returned to Toronto. He is a twenty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Todmorden Branch 10. KELLY, Joseph Patrick “Joe” Joe was born in 1918, the fourth of eight children born to Hannah and Andrew Kelly in Stratford, Ontario. Most of his life was on the Kelly dairy farm near the current Stratford Golf and Country Club on Kelly Lane. After graduation from high school, he moved to Toronto and worked at his uncle’s butcher shop and later used his superb interpersonal skills as a star salesman for Canadian Bearings. Joe enlisted in the Army during World War II serving in Motor Transport, rising to the rank of Sergeant. He trained in Beaufort and was attached to the 5th Infantry Training Battalion. He and wife Margaret (Commander) had two children, Susan and Paul. The family bought property on Morrison Lake in Muskoka and built the family cottage in 1958. Joe was a devoted Catholic, husband, and father and created a legacy of wonderful family times at the lake. Joe passed away in 2009. KEITH, Garland Jesse Garland was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario on February 19, 1919. He was raised in Port Robinson where he met and married his wife Betty. They had a family of four children. Garland enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on July 1, 1942 and served with the Essex Scottish Regiment during World War II. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. Garland was an excellent baseball player. He worked in the steel industry after the war. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613. Garland passed away on October 28, 1997.
