223 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JACKSON, Ella Louise Ella was born on December 2, 1922 to Beatrice Baylis Jackson and Cleveland Jackson and grew up inWindsor and in Detroit. In the summer of 1944, Ella joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC), becoming the first Black woman from Windsor to join the CWAC. She was sent to #3 Basic Training in Kitchener, Ontario in July 1944, graduating in August 1944. She was part of ‘B’ Company. In 1950, she worked as an elevator operator. Ella passed away on October 16, 2002. JARVIS, David J.E. “Dave” Dave was born in London, Ontario on November 18, 1948. In May 1969 he joined the Army (Regular Force) when he was twenty years old. His basic training was in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. He moved on to Petawawa and served for seven years. Dave had deployments in Norway, Germany, London Ontario, Calgary, Windsor, Ottawa, and back to Windsor. While in London, Dave married his wife Sharron and they raised two children. All together Dave served for 29 years. After being discharged in April 1998, Dave went to work for the Farrow Tec Company. Dave is retired, enjoys playing golf and helping out at the Legion. Dave is a proud 36year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255. He has been residing in Windsor since 1990. JACKSON, Gordon Gordon was born on August 18, 1915, in Toronto, Ontario. He was the only child of Garnet S. Jackson and Marie Louise Jackson. He attended Rawlinson Public School and North Toronto Collegiate and was a member of St. Clement’s Anglican Church in North Toronto. His father enlisted with the 166th Battalion in World War I and fought in France with the 75th. Gordon enlisted with 431 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force Regular Force on May 28, 1942 and got his wings in Crumlin on June 25, 1943. He had received his commission just three weeks before being reported missing. Sergeant Jackson was popular with his squadron and was reported to be an ace air bomber by his Wing Commander. Gordon and his crew failed to return after a mission over Paris on July 18, 1944. They were reported to have been killed in action in helping to bomb the Chancellery during an air operation. Pilot Officer Gordon Jackson was 28 years old when he was killed in service. He is buried in grave #24 in the Boran-sur-Oise Communal Cemetery in Oise, France. His service is commemorated on page #343 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance.
