Nelson was born in the hamlet of Glamis on April 24, 1921 to John A. and Clara (Miller) Howe who lived on Lot 34, Concession 1 in Bruce Township, Ontario. The family moved to a farm just north of the village of Paisley before Nelson started school. On June 17, 1940, he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Petawawa for training until December 1940 when he went overseas to England. His duties required him to travel by motorcycle and in 1942 he suffered a fractured skull and leg injuries as the result of a motorcycle accident. He recovered from his injuries and returned to duty, but by mid-February 1943 was admitted to hospital with meningitis. He passed away on February 25, 1943 and is buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, England. HUBERT, Frank Frank was born in Midland, Ontario on February 22, 1892. He was single and a labourer by trade. He joined the 157 Battalion on January 4, 1916 and transferred to the 1st Battalion on November 28, 1916. He served in Canada, Britain, and France during World War I. Frank was killed at the second battle of Passchendaele on November 6, 1917. HOWSE, Herbert Chesley “Herb” Herb was born on February 9, 1921, in Wesleyville, Newfoundland, to James and Annie Howse. He enlisted on September 30, 1940 with the Royal British Navy duringWorldWar II as an Ordinary Seaman and served on: Ganges, Victory, Egret, Victor, Hunter, Ashbury, Duckworth, Chelmer (Victory), and Avalon III. Herb was discharged on April 8, 1946. He received the following medals: 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star with France and Germany Clasp, Defence Medal, War Medal 19391945 and silver War Medal 1939-1945. Before enlisting, he was a high school student. After his discharge on April 8, 1946, he attended and graduated from the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, USA. After graduation, he moved to Toronto and married Bea (Vincent). They had four children together: Nancy, Janet, John and Allan and lived and raised their family in Scarborough. They were married for over 40 years. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Dawes Road Branch 11 from 1999 to 2005. Herb passed away on June 19, 2005 and is buried with his wife at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Scarborough.
