205 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HILL, Percy James Percy was born on September 1, 1923, in Dummer Township, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the Hastings & Princess Pats in Picton, Ontario, at the age of seventeen, on July 4, 1940. Percy was sent to Camp Borden for training and was sent overseas to England in July 1941. Percy was transferred to the Highland Light Infantry and was promoted to Lance Corporal in January 1943. Just prior to D-Day, in May 1944, he wed Doris Davies, a Welsh girl serving with the A.T.S., in Sussex. Percy’s unit landed on D-Day and shortly after in June he was wounded by shell fragments to his face and hand. After convalescing, he rejoined his unit and fought on through to Germany. In October 1945, his son was born in Wales. Percy was back home in Canada in June 1946 and was discharged on July 16 of the same year. He was reunited with his wife and son who had come to Canada in September 1946. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Havelock Branch 389. Percy passed away on May 12, 1989. HOBBS, Leslie Eugene Leslie was born on September 19, 1923, in Orville, Ontario, to John Leslie and Ida Elizabeth Hobbs of Toronto. He was educated in North Bay, Pickering and Markham. In July 1942, he married Agnes Walker from Markham. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the Royal Canadian Regiment on August 2, 1943. He served in the Netherlands during World War II. Two brothers were also in the forces at that time: Maxwell also in the Royals and Reginald in training in Hamilton. Private Leslie Hobbs was in Belgium with his brother Maxwell on March 8, 1945, where he became severely injured with a perforated chest and a compound fracture to the breastbone caused by shell fragments. He was 21 years old when that happened and lived with the aftereffects of that injury for the rest of his life. He returned home to West Hill, Ontario in 1945. Leslie died on October 8, 1986. HILL, Russell Russell was born in Dummer Township, Ontario on September 17, 1899. He joined the Army (Regular Force) with the 93rd Overseas Battalion on May 17, 1916 and was sent for training at Berriefield Camp in Kingston. After four weeks, they discovered that he was underage and discharged him on June 19, 1916. His battalion sailed without him on July 15, 1916. Russell joined the Canadian Forestry Corp on January 12, 1942, during World War II. He did eight weeks of training in Valcartier, Quebec then was shipped out to England and then to Scotland in the Forestry Corp. This group was also known as The Sawdust Fusiliers. He was discharged from service in 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Havelock Branch 389. Russell passed away on April 17, 1967.
