203 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HILL, Gerald Russell Gerald was born in Dummer Township, Ontario on November 15, 1918. He took up residence in Havelock, Ontario in 1935. Gerald enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 12, 1942 and joined the Canadian Forestry Corp along with his father to serve during World War II. However, after heading to basic training in Valcartier, Quebec, he was honourably discharged in February 1942 after five weeks of service as medically unfit. Gerald passed away on July 27, 1989. HILL, Kenneth Garfield “Ken” Ken was born in Dummer Township, Ontario on June 19, 1920. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on July 4, 1940 with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and was shortly after transferred to the Highland Light Infantry. He was shipped out to England after basic training at Camp Borden, Ontario and was assigned to the Dispatch Riders Unit in England. In 1943, he was transferred to the Medical Corp and became an Ambulance driver for #8 General Hospital in England. Ken made it safely home in 1945 being discharged on June 14, 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Oshawa Branch 43 for over twenty years. Ken passed away on May 11, 1885. HILL, Joseph Alaysuis Joseph was born in Dummer Township, Ontario on August 8, 1927. He took up residence in Havelock in 1935. He was too young to join in the Canadian Armed Forces so at the age of fifteen, he joined the U.S.A. Merchant Marine as a Galley Boy in July 1943. He sailed from New York to Italy and Norway during World War II when he turned sixteen. In September 1944, he came down with a case of Malaria. Following his recovery, he made more trips across the Atlantic until he was discharged in 1945. He was a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Havelock Branch 389. Joseph passed away on August 3, 1993. His headstone reads “Galley Boy”.
