He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 and served with the 71st Battalion in the Flying Corps. John was killed in action on November 3, 1917 in Belgium and is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium. GIBSON, Donald H. Donald was born in Toronto, Ontario on October 11, 1935. He enlisted in the Army Reserve Force in September 1952 and signed up to the transport division with the 48th Highlanders. He was discharged in December 1954 and continued his career in transportation until his retirement. Donald held chairs at his branch including Walkathon, House and Property, and Second VP. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Dambusters Branch 617 for 28 years and recently transferred to Centennial Branch 614 before moving to Sudbury, Ontario in June 2021. GIBBONS, Leonard “Garfield” Garfield was born on November 3, 1893, in Tara, Ontario, to Mr. and Mrs. George Gibbons. He enlisted in the Army Regular Force with the 160th Battalion on December 24, 1915. He served overseas in France and in England where he met and married his wife Louisa Sisley Sharp. He was discharged on August 28, 1919. After returning to Canada, they settled in Owen Sound and had seven children. Prior to his enlistment, Garfield was a butcher in Tara and on his return went to work for the Great Lakes Elevator Company. He was one of the founding members of The Royal Canadian Legion Owen Sound Branch 6. He was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal presented by the Dominion Command President of The Royal Canadian Legion. Garfield passed away in 1975, and is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara.
