553 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND YOUNG, Donald E. Donald was born on March 23, 1948 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He enlisted in the Army in April 1965 and served with the 2RCHA and 1st LOC Battery in Canada. He was discharged in May 1975. Donald is a 51-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Owen Sound Branch 6. ZWAAN, Pieter “Pete” ”Peter” Pete was born on February 14, 1939, in Holland. He joined the Canadian Army Reserves in 1957 after coming to Canada with his siblings and parents, being sponsored by a Canadian family. He was discharged in 1959. Pete and his wife Marlene raised their son and two daughters in Hensall and he worked at WGT Hensall for forty years until retirement. He enjoys helping his neighbors and travelling. Peter has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 467 for forty-seven years and has been awarded a Life Membership. He has held the positions of President, Sergeant-at-Arms and Vice President. YOUNG, Jessie Fern Jessie was born in 1910 in Erin Township, Ontario, the daughter of Daniel and Annie Young. She graduated from the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing in 1937, took postgraduate training at the University of Toronto and employed at Toronto General Hospital. In the fall of 1941, Jessie joined the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (CWAAF) which became the RCAFWomen’s Division in February 1942. Following basic training at the No. 6 Manning Depot and serving in the Toronto Military Hospitals, Jessie and nine other Nursing Sisters arrived in the UK in October 1943. Based in England, in addition to nursing duties, she trained women hospital assistants. She returned to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth in October 1945 and was subsequently discharged November 1945. Jessie was assigned to Grace Hospital and Runnymede Convalescent Centre in Toronto. Under the Canadian Vocational Program of the Dominion Department of Labour and the Provincial Department of Education, Jessie was the nurse in charge of a new sixmonth program. The students were returning WRCNS, CWAC and RCAF-WD taking theory and practical nursing to ease them back into civilian life and potential employment opportunities. Lieutenant Jessie Fern Young passed away at the age of 93 in 2004 and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Acton, Ontario.
