535 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WHITNEY, William Sr. William was born on April 10, 1882 in Port Whitby and married Mary Ferguson in 1906. They had three children prior to William joining the military and three children after his discharge. They had three boys and three girls. All three of his sons served in World War II. William enlisted on December 15, 1915 in Owen Sound, Ontario. He was discharged due to injuries sustained during his service on March 31, 1919. He served in England and France with the 147th Battalion. William was gassed twice, once on September 7, 1917 and again on November 10, 1918. He had lung problems for the rest of his life. William was a horseman and drove stagecoach between Owen Sound and Meaford, Ontario prior to enlisting. After the war he drove for Cottens Taxi. William passed away on February 12, 1959 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 in Owen Sound until his death. WHITTARD, Ross F. Ross was born in Brussels, Ontario, on December 21, 1920, to Benjamin and Sarah Whittard. Following school, he worked as a farmer. On June 20, 1940, he enlisted in London with the Elgin Regiment of the Canadian Army. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps in March 1942. Ross arrived in England in October 1942, became a gunner and qualified loader by the end of 1942, but he wanted to be a driver. He drove a Sherman Tank with the Three Rivers Regiment in the Italian heat supporting the British Infantry. They drove towards Arezzo, a strategic rail and road center. The Germans fought for position and the terrain was becoming more difficult for the tanks. They were fighting hard at the Battle for Assora and Leonforte, and on July 21, 1944, Trooper Whittard was killed in action. He is buried at the Arezzo War Cemetery near Tuscany, Italy. WHITTARD, Forrest Grant “Bush” Bush was born in Brussels, Ontario on February 21, 1929, to parents Benjamin and Sarah Whittard. He was not old enough to join the service for World War II but found a way to serve his country when he was 27 years old. He joined the Regular Forces on February 29, 1956, in London, Ontario. He was at Wolseley Barracks, where training for the Regular and Reserve Units were conducted. He was in the 4th Battalion. He was deployed overseas and became a member of the United Nations Emergency Forces and served in Egypt and Germany. He received the Special Service Medal and the United Nations Emergency Canadian Forces Decoration. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. Upon his return to Canada, he worked at the Canadian Force Base, London in the maintenance and supply facility from 1971 until 1979, and honourably discharged on February 21, 1979. He retired to Brussels, his hometown, and became involved with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 218 and his Church. Bush passed away on November 28, 2018.
